Fall Term
PUAD 5100: Organizational Designs for Governance and Public Management (AKA "OD")
For students coming in to the MPA program with backgrounds in Political Science, some of this course may seem like review. Material includes how Canada’s democratic institutions are structured, an in-depth look at the roles and responsibilities of the Public Services, and ongoing issues affecting the structure of Canadian Federalism and the Public Service.
PUAD 5120: Introduction to Public Policy (AKA "Policy")
This course is designed to give students an appreciation for how public policy is developed, what factors influence the creation of public policy, and how policy should be analyzed and evaluated.
PUAD 5130: Managerial Economics (AKA "Micro")
This course gives first years a basic understanding of the principles of microeconomics (and will likely contain a lot of review for individuals coming from an economics or commerce backgrounds). Course material includes terms of trade, shifts in supply and demand curves, and monopolistic cost structures. Bring a ruler.
PUAD 5140: Quantitative Methods (AKA "Stats")
Material in “Stats” includes an introduction to basic forms of statistical analyses (including T-Test, ANOVA, Chi Square, linear regression) and analyzing and presenting data within the environment of the public service. Invest in a good calculator for this course (and a tutor if need be). One word of advice: study!
Winter Term
PUAD 5131 Public Economics (AKA "Macro")
An introduction to Macroeconomic principles, including taxation rates, tariffs, GDP, and the role of government in the economy.
PUAD 5250 Strategic Financial Management (AKA "SFM" or "Finance")
Strategic Financial Management offers a mix of accounting and comptrollership. The first half focuses on the nitty-gritty of accounting principles, including balance sheets, and different types of financial reporting. The second half looks at accountability mechanisms in government, and includes a project where you must design and budget for a government program.
PUAD 5170 Public Sector Human Resources Management (AKA "HR")
This course covers a range of issues in public sector HR including workplace orientation, worker rights, performance evaluation, collective bargaining, and public sector renewal.
PUAD 5180 Research Methods and Policy Analysis for the Public Sector (AKA "RM" or "Research")
Consider this course a practical application of concepts encountered in 5140. Students are placed into groups and charged with performing a research study including a literature review, interviews, survey development and implementation, data analysis, and the presentation of a final report.
