Mentorship Program 2020-2021
What is the Mentorship Program?
The mentorship program was launched in the fall of 2005 and connects second year MPA students with executive level mentors from the public service. Mentors provide their mentees with guidance in finding a career in an area of interest or answer any questions about the public service. It is meant to be an informal relationship between the mentor and the student via face-to-face contact, phone, and email.
Who Benefits from the Mentorship Program?
Mentoring is a commitment on the part of the mentor to make his or her experience and understanding available to someone less experienced; the student. Mentoring is about sharing knowledge and shaping futures - one person sharing his or her experience and knowledge to help another, and in so doing, enriching themselves and their organization.
MPA Student-Mentor Relationship
Effective mentors do more than share; they model and they teach. The School of Public Administration (SPA) understands that mentors are high level public servants with busy schedules and we are thankful to those who have taken time to participate in the program, year after year. This mentorship program immediately exposes the student to expert advice, encouragement and support. Students are expected to be willing to invest time and energy into the partnership, similar to the commitment of their mentors.
This commitment is rewarded with a chance to develop and hone professional skills, increase self-confidence and image, and explore professional opportunities. The MPA Mentorship Program will be most valuable to you as you complete the final year of your degree and aim to get some insight into the public service!
